What Fort Lauderdale's curb takes from a shed tear-down

A shed you knock down yourself turns into three kinds of waste, and the city treats each one differently. The walls, roof panels and junk inside can go in the monthly bulk pile, as long as the whole pile is 10 cubic yards or less and goes out by 7 a.m. on your service day. The concrete pad, pavers, block footings and the dirt under them cannot: Fort Lauderdale's bulk service refuses concrete, pavers, tiles, dirt, sod and sand.

The vines and branches that grew over the shed are yard waste, which goes weekly. The city wants it unbagged, with limbs no longer than 12 feet and no thicker than 12 inches. Tree stumps are refused in bulk.

Sorting all of that across two collection days and a separate haul for the pad is a lot of weekends. When Dany's crew takes the shed, every piece, from the roof screws to the pad if you want it gone, leaves on the truck in one visit.

The brush around the shed can go in the same job, too, so you do not have to cut it down to the city's yard waste limits and wait for the weekly pickup.

Permits and power for a Fort Lauderdale shed

Whether taking down a shed or detached garage needs a permit is a question for the city's Development Services Department, Building Services. If it does, you as the property owner or your general contractor pull it. Rapid Haul does not pull permits.

Some older sheds have a light or an outlet run to them. Have an electrician disconnect the power before the crew comes, and a plumber cap any water line. The crew checks for wires and pipes at the walk-through and will not cut anything that has not been cleared.
