Sunrise picks up bulk every week, with one big exception

Sunrise is generous with household bulk. Single-family homes get bulk pickup every week, on the first garbage day of the week. Participating multifamily communities east of Pine Island Road go on Thursdays and west of Pine Island Road on Fridays, and condos with their own bulk areas may run a different schedule.

Couches, chairs, mattresses, tables, appliances, carpet, fencing and large yard waste are all accepted. Take the doors off refrigerators, washers, dryers and stoves. Roll and tie rugs, carpet, padding and fencing. Put it all out no earlier than 7 p.m. the night before and by 7 a.m. on the day, and keep it off and away from mailboxes, utility poles and fences.

The exception is remodel debris. The city will not collect construction, remodeling or demolition debris, including all concrete and brick. It also skips hazardous materials, auto parts, debris from commercial lawn services, and anything too large or too heavy to load safely. Need a pickup on another day? The city sends you to Republic Services, at your expense.

Interior tear-outs in Sunrise: permits and where the debris goes

Permits come from the City of Sunrise Building Division, part of Community Development, at 10770 W. Oakland Park Boulevard ((954) 572-2354). The city says plans for demolition, additions, alterations or new construction go first to Broward County's ePermits OneStop if necessary, and interior renovations can be submitted directly to the Building Division. Your GC or you as the owner pull the permit. Rapid Haul never pulls permits.

The debris is where people get caught. Drywall, tile, cabinets and flooring can't go to the curb. The city's monthly Saturday drop-off also refuses contractor-generated debris, and Sunrise is not on Broward County's list of participating cities for the county drop-off centers. So the debris plan has to be set before the first wall comes open.

Rapid Haul does non-structural interior tear-out and the haul, or just the haul if your crew did the demo. Room tear-out starts at $750 and debris pickups start at $200. Never anything that holds up the house.

HOAs, condos and a 1960s golf village

Sunrise began as developer Norman Johnson's Sunrise Golf Village in 1960 and 1961, grew in the 1970s, and expanded by annexation west toward the Everglades. Sawgrass Mills and Amerant Bank Arena are both here. About 68.8% of homes are owner-occupied, with a median value around $354,500, and 19.5% of residents are 65 or older (Census, 2020 to 2024).

The city's own map of community associations lists HOAs and condos such as Countryside at Welleby, Banyan Estates, Del Rio Village, Brentwood Manors and Crosswinds Homes. That means association rules on work hours and piles, older homes ready for new kitchens and baths, and condo units being emptied for a sale. Mention your association when you text.

Pricing and same-day from Hollywood
