The city's bulk calendar versus a full garage

In Fort Lauderdale, WM collects bulk once a month on your scheduled service day. The pile has to be at the curb by 7 a.m., it cannot go out more than 24 hours early, and it cannot sit more than 24 hours after pickup, or the city may cite you. The pile also has to stay at 10 cubic yards or less. Anything over that needs a special pickup by appointment, for a fee.

That timing is the problem with a garage. You cannot empty it over a weekend and leave the pile on the swale for three weeks until your date comes around. And there is no free fallback: Fort Lauderdale is not on Broward County's list of cities whose residents can use the county bulk and yard drop-off centers.

Most garages hold a few items the monthly pile turns away or limits. The city's rules worth knowing before you start sorting:

• Old tires: two at a time next to the black cart, with a cap of four per household per year
• Electronics: curbside pickup only by appointment through the city (954-828-8000)
• Paint, chemicals and other hazardous liquids: not in bulk; the city runs free Saturday drop-off events instead
• Leftover pavers, tile, concrete, sand and bags of dirt: refused in bulk
• Loose glass: only in a sturdy, rigid container

What Rapid Haul hauls from the garage

Dany takes the boxes from the last move, the shelving units, the treadmill, the broken mower, the spare mattress and the chest freezer in the corner. Leftover pavers and tile from an old project can go too; they are heavy, so photograph them and the price will already account for it. Tires in a stack of more than four are not a problem for the crew.

Paint cans, pool chemicals, gas cans and propane need special handling. Tell Dany what you have. He will tell you what the crew can take, and the rest can go to one of the city's Saturday household hazardous waste events. The city has listed Mills Pond Park, 2201 NW 9th Avenue, among its rotating sites.

You do not need to sort before the crew arrives. Just know what you are keeping: move it to one side or tape it, and the crew loads everything else. Maybe boxes go on the driveway for you to check before they go on the truck.

Fort Lauderdale garages range from detached single-family houses to townhomes where the garage is the only storage the unit has. In a townhome, the garage door often opens onto a shared drive, so the crew loads fast and keeps the drive clear for your neighbors.
