How Pembroke Pines bulk pickup handles a garage

Pembroke Pines has more generous bulk service than many cities. Eastern Waste Systems (EWS) picks up bulk and yard waste twice a month on your scheduled bulk day, and you can mix the two in one pile. Each pickup is limited to 10 cubic yards per home. For conforming piles over that, residents can request up to two additional pickups per calendar year directly with EWS at (954) 543-9800. After those, it costs $15 per cubic yard over the limit.

The pile has to be out before 7:00 a.m. and at least 3 feet from mailboxes, trees, parked cars and overhead wires. Loose leaves and small branches have to be bagged, tied or bundled.

For a garage you clear a little at a time, that system works. For a garage you want empty this weekend, it means a pile on the lawn for up to two weeks, the extra-pickup paperwork, or per-cubic-yard fees. Dany's crew loads straight from the garage to the truck instead.

Garage items the city won't take at the curb

A few things that live in nearly every garage come with conditions in Pembroke Pines:

• Old fridges and freezers: Freon must be certified purged, and refrigerators need the doors and compressor removed
• Glass of any kind, including old mirrors, glass shelves and table tops
• Hazardous waste like paint, pool chemicals and solvents
• Hot tubs, boats and other oversized or overweight items, which EWS quotes as a separate pickup
• Leftover renovation debris, which the city treats as contractor-generated

Paint, chemicals and the city's drop-off events

Pembroke Pines holds household hazardous waste and electronics drop-off events four times a year at the City's Wastewater Treatment Plant, 13975 Pembroke Road. They are for residents only, with proof of residency. The events do not take appliances, tires, office furniture or regular trash.

Pembroke Pines is also not on Broward County's list of participating cities for the county bulk and yard drop-off centers. So the old fridge, the tires and the stack of furniture in the garage do not have a free self-haul option. Rapid Haul takes those. Price and timing for a Pembroke Pines garage

Garage cleanouts start at $300 for a light load: some boxes and a few items along one wall. A full two-car garage costs more. Text a wide photo from the open door and close-ups of anything heavy, like a chest freezer, old tile or a weight bench, to (754) 249-1015. Dany sends one flat price covering the crew, loading, hauling and disposal. If the old sofa from the living room or the patio set is going too, put it in the same photo. It is one trip and one price.
