How bulky pickup works in Miami Lakes

Miami Lakes is one of the cities Miami-Dade County's Department of Solid Waste Management serves. Garbage goes out twice a week, recycling every other week, and bulky items and yard debris are picked up by appointment only.

Each household is entitled to "two bulky waste pickups per year of up to 25 cubic yards each." You book online at miamidade.gov/bulkywaste, on the MDC Solid Waste app or by calling 311, and you book before anything goes to the curb. Appointments open 30 days in advance. The two can be combined into "one pickup of up to 50 cubic yards," but if a pile goes over 25 cubic yards and you combine, "you will exhaust your next available pickup."

Timing is strict. The pile goes out no more than 3 days before the appointment and by 7 a.m. on the day. Since April 1, 2023, an early pile can bring anything from a warning notice up to a civil citation.

  • Taken: sofas, mattresses enclosed in a plastic bag, large tree limbs and branches, other household trash
  • Yard clippings for manual pickup: bagged or bundled in lengths up to 4 feet, each piece under 50 pounds
  • Book first, then set out: never the other way around

Tear-outs, permits and the HOA affidavit

Demolition and other permits in Miami Lakes come from the Town of Miami Lakes Building Department at Town Hall, 6601 Main Street, (305) 827-4015, through the eTRAKiT portal. The Town lists demolition among the projects that need a permit, and its application form is the Miami Lakes Building Permit Application and HOA Affidavit. So in most neighborhoods, the association is part of the paperwork before any tear-out starts. Your GC or you as the owner pull the permit and handle the HOA side. Rapid Haul does not.

Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and the haul: kitchen cabinets and counters, bathroom tile and fixtures, flooring and interior partition walls. The county's drop-off centers limit construction and demolition debris to three (3) cubic yards per customer per day, so a full kitchen or bath usually means many trips. Dany's crew takes it all in one.

A planned town of lakes, garages and HOAs

Miami Lakes was built as a master-planned community from 1962 by Sengra, now the Graham Companies, on former Graham family dairy land. It has curving, tree-shaded streets, many curving lakes and a Main Street town center. The county describes the housing as primarily single-family, with some townhomes and multifamily units.

The town has about 30,467 people in roughly 11,238 households, and 62.2% of homes are owner-occupied. Neighborhoods include Loch Lomond, The Moors and Royal Oaks. Garage cleanouts are one of Rapid Haul's main jobs, and in a planned town like this one, clearing a packed garage in one visit means nothing sits on the swale waiting for a county appointment.

How it works and what it costs

Rapid Haul is based in Hollywood and covers Miami-Dade as a main service area. Text a photo to (754) 249-1015 and Dany sends one flat price that covers labor, loading, hauling and disposal. Same-day pickup is often possible when you call early, Monday to Saturday, 7 AM to 7 PM. No appointment window, no 3-day rule, and you keep both county pickups for later.

Junk removal is paid after the job. Jobs of $1,000 and over, mostly tear-out, take a 50% deposit.

  • Appliance removal from $100
  • Furniture removal from $125
  • Garage cleanouts from $300
  • Shed removal from $350
  • Room demo from $750

Miami Lakes: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

How many bulky pickups do I get in Miami Lakes?

Two a year per household, booked through the county online, on the MDC Solid Waste app or by calling 311. Each is up to 25 cubic yards. They can be combined into one of up to 50 cubic yards, but going over 25 cubic yards uses up your next pickup.

Can I put my pile out a week early?

No. The county allows the pile out no more than 3 days before your appointment, and early set-outs can bring a warning notice or a civil citation. If you need it gone now, Dany can often come the same day.

Do I need HOA approval for a tear-out in Miami Lakes?

The Town's permit application comes with an HOA affidavit, so expect your association to be part of it. Your GC or you as the owner handle the permit and the HOA. Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and haul.

Where is the nearest county drop-off center?

There is none inside Miami Lakes. The closest listed by address are Palm Springs North at 7870 NW 178th St in Hialeah and North Dade at 21500 NW 47 Avenue. Bring a Florida driver's license or ID.

How much is a garage cleanout in Miami Lakes?

Garage cleanouts start at $300. The final flat price depends on how full the garage is and what is in it. Text a photo for one all-in number.
