How the county bulky service works in Miami Gardens

Miami Gardens is served by Miami-Dade County's Department of Solid Waste Management. Garbage goes in your 96-gallon green cart twice a week, and recycling every other week. The city's flyer says bulky waste pickup is free twice a year for every single-family household in the city, per fiscal year running October 1 to September 30.

You book through 311, online or on the MDC Solid Waste App before anything goes to the curb. Appointments open up to 30 days ahead, and there are no waitlists or fit-ins. The pile goes out no more than three days before the appointment and by 7 a.m. on the day, within 10 feet of the street and at least five feet from mailboxes, cars, trees, poles and sprinkler heads. Since April 1, 2023, an early pile can bring a warning or a civil citation. The limit is two pickups of up to 25 cubic yards each, and a pile over 25 cubic yards uses up your next pickup.

The county takes furniture, appliances with refrigerator and freezer doors removed, rolled carpet, mattresses sealed in plastic and up to 4 tires. It does not take:

  • Microwaves, electronics and TVs
  • Auto parts, central air units and fiberglass insulation
  • Household chemicals and oil-based paint
  • Rock, dirt and sand
  • Any single item weighing more than 150 pounds

Tear-outs and permits in Miami Gardens

Permits here come from the City of Miami Gardens Building Services at City Hall, 18605 NW 27th Avenue, 1st Floor, 305-622-8027, not from the county. The city's FAQ says a permit is required to construct, alter, repair, remove or demolish any building or part of one, and the city publishes a Demolition Permit Checklist. Your GC or you as the owner pull the permit. Rapid Haul does not.

Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and the haul: kitchen cabinets and counters, bathroom tile and fixtures, flooring and interior partition walls. The county allows construction and demolition materials in a bulky pickup of "no more than 3 cubic yard," and its Trash and Recycling Centers limit it to three (3) cubic yards per customer per day. A full kitchen or bath is more than that, so the rest needs a private hauler, which the county itself lists as an option.

Bunche Park, Carol City and the homes around them

Miami Gardens is a city of about 111,640 people, incorporated in 2003. Before that the area was known as Carol City. Bunche Park was built in the early 1950s for Black veterans, and families came for middle-class homes at affordable prices. The city is commonly described as Florida's largest majority-Black city, and it is home to Hard Rock Stadium and Calder Race Course.

Neighborhoods like Bunche Park date from the early 1950s, so a remodel there can mean pulling out decades-old tile, fixtures and cabinets. And with only two bulky appointments a year, a family clearing out a parent's house, or a landlord turning over a rental, often needs more than the county schedule allows. Neighborhoods we cover include Andover, Bunche Park, Carol City, Lake Lucerne, Norland, Opa-locka North and Scott Lake.

  • Appliance removal from $100
  • Furniture removal from $125

Miami Gardens: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

How many free bulky pickups do I get in Miami Gardens?

Two a year for single-family households, per the city's flyer, booked through 311, online or the MDC Solid Waste App. Each is up to 25 cubic yards, and a bigger pile uses up your next pickup.

Will the county take my old TV or microwave?

Not at the curb. Microwaves, electronics and TVs are on the county's not-accepted list. The North Dade Trash and Recycling Center takes electronics, or Rapid Haul can take them with the rest of your load.

Can I use the Norwood drop-off center?

Yes. Miami Gardens residents are eligible for the county's Trash and Recycling Centers, open daily 7 a.m. to 5:30 pm. Bring a Florida driver's license or ID with an eligible address. Norwood does not take white goods.

Who issues demolition permits in Miami Gardens?

City of Miami Gardens Building Services at City Hall. Your GC or you as the owner pull the permit, and Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and haul.

How fast can you clear a house in Miami Gardens?

Often the same day when you call early, Monday to Saturday. Full house cleanouts start at $1,000, and Dany gives one flat price from photos.
