Hollywood bulk takes furniture, with rules attached

Furniture is exactly what Hollywood's bulk pickup is for. The city defines bulk as furniture, mattresses, appliances, bicycles and similar goods, collected once a month on a day you find on the city's Sanitation and Code Compliance Zones Map. One old couch on the right day is fine.

The rules are where people slip. Bulk may not go out more than 24 hours before your service. Without an alley, it goes on the swale or the unpaved right-of-way, not near guy wires, utility poles, trees, water meters, cable boxes or fences. And it may not be mixed with yard waste. Break a rule and the city gives you 24 hours to fix it, then removes the pile and charges the disposal fee plus a $200 administration fee.

If your bulk day is three weeks out, or you cannot lift the sofa to the swale, that is when to text Dany.

Beach condos and buildings over two units

City bulk pickup is for houses and small buildings. Hollywood's code says structures of more than two units must provide their own refuse collection, and the city calls condo and apartment service an open market, with boards hiring a city-permitted private hauler. If you live in a beach condo or a larger apartment building, there is no city bulk day for your old sofa.

Most buildings set rules for moving furniture: service elevator reservations, wall pads, work hours and where a truck can load. Older homes, heavier furniture

Hollywood was founded in 1921 and had more than 12,170 single-family homes by 1960, according to Wikipedia. The city calls Hollywood Lakes its oldest neighborhood, and the beach district has buildings dating to the 1920s and 1930s. Older homes can mean narrower doorways and furniture that has been in the house for a long time: solid wood bedroom sets, heavy china cabinets, sleeper sofas with steel frames.

The crew takes legs, doors and drawers off when that makes the carry safer, and carries pieces out without dragging them across tile or terrazzo. Mirrors and glass tops go straight to the truck.

Furniture removal starts at $125, for one piece from an easy spot. More pieces, heavier pieces, stairs, elevators and long hallway carries raise the price. Dany looks at your photo and gives one flat number for labor, loading, hauling and disposal. You pay after the job.

Close to home for the crew

If you have a pickup truck and a free Saturday, Hollywood is a participating city at Broward County's residential drop-off centers in Pompano Beach, Davie and West Park. They are open Saturdays 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., up to four times a month, and you need a photo ID and a document showing your address. Vehicles larger than a 1-ton pickup, beds longer than 8 feet or wider than 6 feet, and trailers longer than 8 feet are not allowed. A single chair fits. A bedroom set usually does not.
