Village crews take some bulk, but never construction debris

Miami Shores is not in Miami-Dade County's collection area. The Village's own Public Works Solid Waste Division collects garbage, recycling and bulk from over 3,500 homes twice a week, with its own garbage trucks, grabber trucks and loaders, and every home must use the Village service.

Village code lets crews remove "up to three cubic yards of accumulated bulky waste" on their regular routes, as long as tree trunks and branches are cut to five feet or less, under two inches thick and stacked neatly. To schedule a bulky pickup, you call Public Works at 305-795-2210. Where there is safe alley access, refuse goes at the rear property line; otherwise it goes at the curb.

Two things catch people out here:

  • Construction debris is listed in the Village fee schedule as "not collected by village"
  • Bulky trash is No. 5 on the Village's Top 10 Code Violations, so put items out only during approved periods
  • Paint, pesticides and chemicals: the Village tells you to call Miami-Dade 311 for accepting facilities
  • Grass and leaves go in 20 to 40 gallon containers, each under 50 pounds

Tear-outs, demolition permits and historic homes

Permits come from the Miami Shores Village Building Department at 10050 NE 2nd Ave, 305-795-2204. The Village's demolition requirements include a notarized owner authorization with the warranty deed, utility disconnection notices, a pest-control clearance letter, a survey and a separate permit for a temporary perimeter fence. Ordinance No. 2026-04, adopted 5/5/26, is titled as requiring site plan approval and a master building permit for the redevelopment before any building's demolition permit, with Historic Preservation Board review for homes on the historic inventory.

Your GC or you as the owner handle all of that. Rapid Haul does not pull permits and does not tear down houses. What Dany's crew does is the non-structural tear-out inside a home (old tile, cabinets, fixtures, flooring, interior partition walls) and the haul. Since the Village does not collect construction debris at all, every piece of a remodel has to leave by private haul anyway.

Mediterranean homes, long ownership and full houses

Miami Shores was developed in the 1920s by the Shoreland Company as "America's Mediterranean," mostly single-family homes with very few multi-family units, on Biscayne Bay. The Village Council has designated over forty homes as historic, including many 1924 to 1929 Centennial Homes on NE 91st to 102nd Streets and along the Grand Concourse.

Ownership here is unusually high: 87.5% of homes are owner-occupied, and the median owner-occupied value is $864,400. When a long-held home is sold or settled, the volume is far more than a Village bulky pickup is built for. That is where an estate or full house cleanout fits: the family says what stays, the crew clears the rest room by room and sweeps as it goes.

Miami Shores: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

Does Miami Shores pick up construction debris?

No. The Village fee schedule lists construction debris as not collected by the Village. Rapid Haul hauls it, with construction debris pickup starting at $200.

How do I schedule a bulky pickup in Miami Shores?

Call Public Works at 305-795-2210. Crews take up to three cubic yards on regular routes, and putting bulk out at the wrong time is one of the Village's top code violations.

Does my pile go in the alley or at the curb?

Village code puts refuse at the rear property line where there is safe alley access, and at the curb in front of the property otherwise. When Rapid Haul does the job, nothing has to be set out: the crew loads straight from the house, garage or yard.

Can you demolish my house in Miami Shores?

No. Rapid Haul does non-structural tear-out only and never pulls permits. Full demolition here involves the Village Building Department, Ordinance 2026-04 and, for listed homes, the Historic Preservation Board.

Can family be there during an estate cleanout?

Yes. You tell Dany what stays and what goes, the crew keeps the keep pile separate and works around you.

How much does an estate cleanout cost in Miami Shores?

Full house cleanouts start at $1,000. The final flat price depends on volume and what is in the house. Text photos or ask Dany for a quick look.
