What Miami Springs Public Works picks up, and what it leaves for you

Miami Springs runs its own trash service. It is not one of the cities Miami-Dade County collects for. The Public Works Sanitation Department picks up household garbage every other week from a 90-gallon container per home, which also takes light yard clippings like grass and small branches.

Bulk is weekly. Household furniture and large tree debris can go out one day before your scheduled pickup, not earlier. Once the week's bulk run is finished, the City makes no extra stops, so a pile that misses its day sits until the next one.

Two more rules matter for a cleanout. Keep vegetation in its own pile, away from household and construction debris, or the City may leave a mixed pile until a crew separates it. And building materials such as drywall, cinder blocks, rebar and tile are the homeowner's responsibility to dispose of. The bulk truck is not for remodel debris.

That is where a hauler makes sense: a tear-out, a load too big or too mixed for one bulk day, or a job that can't wait a week. Questions about your pickup day go to Public Works at 305-805-5170.

Tear-outs and the City Building Department

Permits in Miami Springs come from the City of Miami Springs Building Department on the second floor of City Hall, 201 Westward Drive, (305) 805-5030. The City publishes its own demolition checklist page, which links its full demolition permit requirements. Your general contractor, or you as the owner, pulls the permit. Rapid Haul does not pull permits.

What Dany does is the non-structural tear-out and the haul. Old kitchen cabinets and counters, bathroom tile, tubs and vanities, flooring and interior finishes come out, and nothing that holds the house up gets touched. Since the City leaves drywall, block and tile to the homeowner, the debris leaves on Rapid Haul's truck as part of the same flat price, not at the curb.

Homes in Miami Springs: a 1926 city with a Pueblo Revival look

Miami Springs was laid out in the 1920s land boom by Glenn Curtiss and James Bright as Country Club Estates and incorporated in 1926. Its main architectural style is Pueblo Revival, with some Mission-style buildings, and its historic sites include the Curtiss Mansion and Glenn H. Curtiss Memorial Circle.

It is a settled town. The 2020 Census counted 5,397 housing units and 5,156 households, with only 4.5% of units vacant and nearly half of households married couples. The core of the city sits in a rough triangle between NW 36th Street, the Miami River canal and the Ludlam Canal.

In practice, Miami Springs calls tend to be a kitchen or bath being redone in an older house, a garage or spare room emptied before a remodel, or a family clearing a parent's home. In older houses, Dany walks the job first and takes extra care around original finishes you want kept.

Drop-off options for Miami Springs residents

Miami-Dade's Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers are limited to residents of unincorporated Miami-Dade and ten listed cities, and Miami Springs is not one of them. A City drop-off site for residents is not published on the pages we checked. So for most loads the choice is the weekly bulk day or a hauler. If you are unsure which fits, send Dany the photo and he will tell you honestly whether the bulk truck can handle it.

Miami Springs: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

When can I put bulk out in Miami Springs?

Household furniture and large tree debris can go out one day before your scheduled weekly bulk pickup. Call Public Works at 305-805-5170 for your day.

Will the City take my old bathroom tile and drywall?

No. The City says building materials such as drywall, cinder blocks, rebar and tile are the homeowner's responsibility. Rapid Haul hauls construction debris from $200.

I missed bulk day. Can the City come back?

The City makes no extra bulk stops once the week's scheduled pickup is done. You can wait a week or have Dany take it, often the same day if you call early.

Who pulls the demolition permit for a remodel?

Your general contractor, or you as the owner, through the City of Miami Springs Building Department at City Hall. Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out and the haul.

Can I use a county trash and recycling center?

Miami-Dade limits its Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers to unincorporated residents and ten listed cities. Miami Springs is not on that list.
