South Miami bulk pickup: what is free, what is billed, what is refused

South Miami collects its own bulk trash. The City's Solid Waste Division runs a weekly scheduled bulk route, while Miami-Dade County handles curbside recycling under an inter-local agreement.

The free amount is set out plainly: up to one-half truckload (12.5 cubic yards). More than that costs $156 per half-truckload or part of one. Special bulk items cost $75 each, and the City's list includes air conditioners, refrigerators, stoves, washers, dryers, water heaters and furniture. Appliance doors come off, and special items go out no more than 24 hours before collection.

So a full-house cleanout at the curb is not free here. A couple of sofas, a fridge and a washer add up to several $75 items before the volume charge starts. That is the point where one flat price from a hauler is often the simpler number.

What the curb refuses, and who it falls on

The bulk route takes bagged household debris, bagged yard clippings, flattened cardboard, and branches or shrubs cut to five feet or less. It does not take wood, decks, roofing or fencing, construction and remodeling debris, dirt or sod, highly flammable materials, vehicle parts, paint or toxic materials.

The City is clear about responsibility: construction debris belongs to the owner, or to the contractor if that was agreed before the contract was signed. Settle who hauls before work starts. If the answer is you, Dany can take it.

Placement rules apply to whatever does go out: in front of the home, within five feet of the pavement edge, at least three feet from mailboxes, cars, trees and poles, off drains and meter boxes, and never a pile shared with a neighbor.

Tear-outs and the South Miami Building Department

South Miami issues its own permits. The City of South Miami Building Department enforces the Florida Building Code within City limits, with a counter open weekdays from 8:00 am to 3:00 pm and a phone line at (305) 663-6355. Your general contractor, or you as the owner, pulls the permit. Rapid Haul does not.

Rapid Haul does non-structural tear-out and the haul. In South Miami that often means exactly what the curb refuses: an old wood deck, a fence line, a bathroom or kitchen torn back to the studs. Deck demo starts at $550 and room demo at $750, with nothing that holds up the house touched.

Homes here: 1928 Tudors next to newer streets

South Miami incorporated in 1927 and had 12,026 residents and 5,297 housing units in the 2020 Census. The Cambridge Lawns Historic District holds about 30 Tudor Revival and Mediterranean Revival homes completed in 1928, recognized by the City in 2005. The University of Miami campus sits against the city's eastern edge along Red Road.

Older houses here bring older backyards: decks gone soft, fences past saving, sheds and patios. Inside, a kitchen or bath redo in a 1920s house means plaster, tile and heavy fixtures that the bulk truck will not take.
