Bulky pickup in Cutler Bay: book first, then the swale

The town says Miami-Dade County's Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) handles garbage and recycling for many Cutler Bay homes, but homes in a homeowners' association may have a different provider. If you are in an HOA, check with it first.

For county-served homes, each household gets two large trash pickups a year at no charge, scheduled with the County by calling 3-1-1 or through the 3-1-1 website. The town is firm on one point: bulky waste is not allowed on the swale before you have a pickup confirmation.

The county brochure fills in the rest. Each property gets two pickups of up to 25 cubic yards each per calendar year, or one combined pickup of up to 50 cubic yards. You can book online at miamidade.gov/bulkywaste, on the MDC Solid Waste App or 311Direct app, or by calling 311. Trash cannot go to the curb more than 3 days before the appointment, and since April 1, 2023, early set-out can bring anything from a warning notice to a civil citation. The brochure lists sofas, mattresses in a plastic bag, large tree limbs and branches and other household trash as examples of what it takes.

When a private haul makes more sense here

The county system works if you can book ahead and wait. It is a harder fit when your HOA uses a different provider with its own rules, when you have already used both pickups this year, when you need the garage clear by the weekend, or when the pile is remodel debris.

Drop-off centers near Cutler Bay

Cutler Bay is one of the cities whose residents can use Miami-Dade's Trash and Recycling Centers, which open daily, roughly 7 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., with proof of residency. That comes from a summary of county material rather than a county page we could open, so confirm with 311 before you go.

Centers close to Cutler Bay include Eureka Drive at 9401 SW 184 St, South Miami Heights at 20800 SW 117 Ct, West Perrine at 16651 SW 107 Ave and Moody Drive at 12970 SW 268 St. The county says the centers take household trash, yard cuttings and up to three cubic yards of construction and demolition debris per customer per day. Check the current limit with 311 before you load a kitchen into your car.

Kitchen and bath tear-outs: permits in Cutler Bay

The Town of Cutler Bay Building Division, part of the Department of Community Development, handles building plan review, permits and inspections. The town's demolition procedures say demolition permits are accepted only from qualified contractors, so your general contractor pulls that permit. Under Ordinance 21-06, passed July 21, 2021, building permit applications also need a recent property boundary survey.

Cutler Bay homes: 1980s houses, canals and HOAs

Cutler Bay had 45,425 people in 2020. Census estimates show 15,074 housing units, 69.7% owner-occupied, with a median year built of 1984. About 65.8% are single-family detached homes, 14.0% single-family attached and 12.8% in buildings of 20 or more units. The town sits just west of Biscayne Bay, with dense subdivisions and canals, channels and lakes that are often full in the rainy season. It includes Cutler Ridge on the west side and Lakes by the Bay on the east, with Palmetto Bay to the north and South Miami Heights to the west.

Houses built around 1984 are now 40 years old, which is when kitchens and bathrooms get torn out and redone. Detached homes mean garages, and garages fill up. Residents of the larger condo buildings should check building rules before the crew arrives.
