Florida City's weekly bulk: 2 cubic yards, and no appliances

Florida City is not on Miami-Dade County's garbage route. The county lists it among cities whose waste service is provided by their own local government, and the county only does curbside recycling there. Bulk pickup is run by Waste Management, on a day set by the city's bulk map, with no appointment.

The limit is small. The city's Bulk Waste FAQ says residents may put out up to 2 cubic yards a week, and bulk service is for single-family homes only. Vegetation has to be cut so no piece is over four feet long or over 100 pounds.

The excluded list is where most people get stuck. The city does not take major appliances, construction debris, batteries, tires, auto parts, engines, propane tanks, paint or medical waste. It also refuses anything a lawn service, tree trimmer, landscaper, handyman or general contractor produced, and anything from multi-family or commercial property.

So a dead refrigerator, a washer and dryer, or a room of furniture after a move won't fit the weekly set-out. Rapid Haul takes appliances from $100 and furniture from $125, loaded from inside the house.

Keep it off the empty lot

Bulk goes on the swale in front of your own home, never on an empty lot. The city's FAQ says improper set-outs bring Code Enforcement fines. And Florida City residents are not on the list of people who can use Miami-Dade's Neighborhood Trash and Recycling Centers, including the Moody Drive center in Homestead, which serves eligible county customers only. When the pile is bigger than 2 cubic yards or full of things the city won't take, a hauler is the clean answer.

Tear-outs and permits in Florida City

Building and demolition permits come from the City of Florida City Building and Zoning Department at City Hall, 404 West Palm Drive, 305-247-8222, with online access through eTRAKiT. The city says removal or demolition of any structure within city limits needs a building permit.

Your GC or you as the owner pull that permit. Rapid Haul does the non-structural tear-out (kitchen cabinets, bathroom fixtures, tile, flooring, drywall) and the haul. That haul matters here, because construction debris and anything a contractor generates is excluded from city bulk. Room tear-out starts at $750, and pickups of debris your own crew left start at $200.

Single-family homes, mobile homes and a long memory of Andrew

The county describes Florida City's housing as predominantly single-family, with some multifamily and mobile home developments, over about 10.4 square miles. It is the last mainland stop before the Florida Keys, the eastern gateway to Everglades National Park and the southern end of Florida's Turnpike, with a farming history and a lot of hotels and tourist businesses. Hurricane Andrew did catastrophic damage here in 1992.

For a hauler that means single-family lots and mobile homes, where the usual calls are appliances, sheds and homes cleared between owners or tenants. Shed Removal starts at $350 and Garage Cleanouts at $300.

Florida City and the communities around it

The city's named neighborhoods are not published, so we won't list any. Florida City borders Homestead to the north and east, with unincorporated Miami-Dade around it, including Redland, Leisure City, Naranja and Princeton. Rapid Haul serves all of it on the same terms: a photo, one flat price, and a time that works for you.

Florida City: common questions

Something else on your mind? Call (754) 249-1015.

Will Florida City pick up my old refrigerator?

No. The city's Bulk Waste FAQ lists major appliances as not accepted. Rapid Haul removes appliances from $100.

How much bulk can I put out each week?

Up to 2 cubic yards a week, from single-family homes only, on the day shown on the city's bulk map. Larger cleanouts take weeks of set-outs or one hauler visit.

My handyman left a pile. Will the city take it?

No. Florida City excludes anything generated by lawn services, tree trimmers, landscapers, handymen or general contractors. Debris pickups from Rapid Haul start at $200.

Can I use a Miami-Dade Trash and Recycling Center?

Florida City is not on the county's eligibility list for those centers, so the nearby Moody Drive center is not an option for city residents.

Do I need a permit to take down a shed?

The city says removal or demolition of any structure needs a building permit from the Building and Zoning Department. Your GC or you as the owner pull it.

How much does junk removal cost in Florida City?

One flat price after a photo, covering labor, loading, hauling and disposal. Appliances start at $100, furniture at $125, a garage cleanout at $300 and a full house at $1,000.
